New Visitors : Prof. Alexander Braverman & Prof. Francis Brown

26 Sep 2023

Welcome to our new visiting professors : Alexander Braverman (University of Toronto) & Francis Brown (University of Oxford).

Alexander Braverman got his Ph.D from Tel Aviv University in 1998 (under the supervision of Joseph Bernstein). He then held postdoctoral positions in MIT and Harvard. Between 2004 and 2015 he was a professor of mathematics at Brown University. From 2015 he is a professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto and an associate faculty at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He was an invited speaker at the ICM in 2006. He is a 3 times winner of the Simons Fellowship, and a recipient of two Frontiers of Science awards (in the fields of "Mathematics of String Theory and Condensed Matter" and "Homological Algebra, K-Theory and Noncommutative Algebra"). His research interests include:

- geometric representation theory (in particular, geometric Langlands program)

- mathematical physics (e.g. super-symmetric quantum field theories in dimensions 3 and 4)

- number theory.

Francis Brown is on sabbatical leave from the University of Oxford, where he has been professor of mathematics  and a senior research fellow at All Souls College since 2015 after spending most of his career in the CNRS and at the IHES in Paris. His research interests cover various aspects of algebraic geometry and number theory, with applications to quantum field theory in mathematical physics.
