SPRING

SPRING_TRANS.jpg

SPRING (SwissMAP Program for Reading IN Groups) is a free, one-semester long program for high school students who want to take their interest in mathematics to the next level.
Guided by a tutor (master student, PhD candidate or doctor in mathematics), students work in small groups. A weekly meeting is the occasion for each individual to present and explain his/her reading to the rest of the group.
The semester ends in June with a group presentation of about 30 minutes to other SPRING participants from both Zürich and Geneva.
Students having successfully followed SPRING will be granted a certificate of participation by SwissMAP.

Topics are chosen at the beginning of the semester together with the tutors and the program coordinator: if you are interested in the program but do not know which area of mathematics you would like to explore, this is what the preliminary meetings are for.

In 2020, two groups of students are taking part in the SPRING program in Geneva. One of them is working in topology: their goal is to understand the theorem of classification of surfaces.
The other is working towards building the mathematical background necessary to work on neural networks and machine learning.

Participation requirements

  • In Geneva, students must have participated successfully in the Athena program (maths or physics) during the fall semester and be recommended by their tutors. The program is run during the spring semester only.
  • In Zürich, students need to have participated in the ETH Math Youth Academy weekly classes for at least 2 years and to be comfortable with the reading and writing of rigorous proofs. The program can take place during either semester.

Material

Reading material is provided by SwissMAP.

Contact

The program coordinators are Elise Raphael in Geneva and Kaloyan Slavov in Zürich.
