About us

The National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs) are a funding instrument of the Swiss National Science Foundation with the mission of promoting collaborative long-term research networks in areas of strategic importance.

NCCR SwissMAP (The Mathematics of Physics) is hosted by its leading house – University of Geneva, and co-leading house – ETH Zurich. The research network also includes University of Basel, University of Bern, CERN, EPFL, University of Fribourg and the University of Zurich and mobilizes a community of over 200 researchers.

SwissMAP is an interdisciplinary research network at the crossroads of mathematics and theoretical physics. It aims to encourage the mutual exchange of ideas and methods at the cutting edge of research in these areas. It fosters an environment in which mathematical rigour and physical intuition blend in a natural way. The SwissMAP research projects aim, on the one hand, to use mathematics to understand physical theories and on the other hand to develop mathematics that is inspired by physics.

It is a priority of the network to substantially contribute to training the next generation of mathematicians and physicists, to increase the participation of women in these fields and to develop outreach and knowledge transfer activities.

The SwissMAP Research Station, based in Les Diablerets which opened in 2021, is a partnership between the ETH Zurich and UniGE. The Research Station will not only ensure the sustainability of NCCR SwissMAP activities in Mathematics and
Physics, but will give them international visibility and encourage collaborations between different universities in Switzerland.
