Volunteer in African Mathscamps with SAMI (Supporting African Maths Initiatives)

7 Apr 2022

SAMI Mathscamps are designed as inclusive, student-centered, joyful and empowering one-week experiences for African highschool students. They promote critical thinking and problem solving skills in a social environment via a series of extra-curricular sessions, games, puzzles, physical activities and experiments, prepared over the preceding week by a team of local and of international volunteers. Danilo Lewanski (UNIGE, M. Mariño's Group) is an active member and volunteer.

SAMI supported its first camp in 2011 at Maseno University, Kenya. Since then mathscamps have been spreading to Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Togo, Benin and Cameroon. Each year SAMI helps to recruit and coordinate international volunteers, assists them on their travel preparation and on-site, develop exciting new themes and raise funds for student bursaries and core running costs.

After a pause due to the pandemic, there is a good chance several mathscamps will be active again this summer.

If you are interested in finding out more about the camps, volunteer opportunities or other ways to help please visit their website
