Viera Klasovitá invited to present at ETH Day 2021

1 Dec 2021

This year’s ETH Day 2021 (20th of Nov) was particularly important as ETH Zurich celebrated its 166th anniversary together with guests from research, politics, and industry. Amongst some of the Speakers were the ETH Rector and President Sarah Springman as well as the Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga.

As a tradition, ETH Zurich takes the opportunity during ETH Day, to give an insight into different research topics students work on. Viera Klasovitá was amongst the three talented young researchers from the ETH Zurich Department of Mathematics, who were invited to provide insights into their current work.

Viera is at the moment not only an ETH Zurich Master’s student but is also currently a teacher of the UZH outreach programme Junior Euler Society (JES). The aim of the Junior Euler Society (JES) is to offer interested young people at all school levels, the opportunity to engage with mathematics beyond the school curriculum.

After HighSchool, Viera started studying mathematics at ETH Zurich. For her Bachelor’s thesis, she explored a special class of random graphs called Erdös-Rényi graphs. This was when she realised that applied mathematics was the direction she wanted to pursue. For this reason, she looked into the domain of mathematical optimisation, among other areas. She found this subject area particularly fascinating, and so she decided to do a Master’s thesis in the group of Professor Rico Zenklusen supervised by Dr.Vera Traub. There she is investigating whether it is possible to reduce a variant of the travelling salesman problem to the original problem.
