EMS Women in Mathematics Day (Online, 17th May)

12 Mar 2024

The Women in Math Committee (WiM) of the European Mathematical Society, chaired by Mikaela Iacobelli (ETH Zurich), is organising an event called "EMS/WiM Day" within the initiative of "May 12th", a celebration of women in Mathematics in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani.

The event will be online and will consist of scientific talks (at the level of Colloquium talks) by two distinguished speakers, which will take place on Friday, May 17th, 2024.

Time: 15:00 CEST

Via Zoom:

Date: Friday, May 17th 2024

15:00 Welcome

15:15 Carola Bibiane Schönlieb (University of Cambridge)

16:15 Dusa McDuff (Columbia University)

Titles and abstracts of the talks:

Speaker: Carola Bibiane Schönlieb (University of Cambridge)

Title: Mathematical imaging: From geometric PDEs and variational modelling to deep learning for images

Abstract: : Images are a rich source of beautiful mathematical formalism and analysis. Associ- ated mathematical problems arise in functional and non-smooth analysis, the theory and numerical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations, inverse problems, harmonic, stochastic and statistical analysis, and optimisation. In this talk we will learn about some of these mathematical problems, about variational models and PDEs for image analysis and inverse imaging problems as well as recent advances where such mathematical models are complemented and replaced by deep neural networks. The talk is furnished with applications to art restoration, forest conservation and cancer research.

Speaker: Dusa McDuff (Columbia University)

Title: Embedding problems in symplectic topology

Abstract: This talk will be a gentle introduction to the world of symplectic geometry, and will explain some of the curious results about the question of when one region in Euclidean space embeds symplectically into another.
