Description of the conference:

The primary goals of the workshop are to promote the visibility of women in fields of research at the threshold of mathematics and theoretical physics and to stimulate interactions across the borders of mathematics and theoretical physics.

The workshop is targeting a field of research where women are specially underrepresented. We wish to help create a community/network for women "at the intersection of mathematics and theoretical physics", a field where genuine interaction is essential due to the interdisciplinary nature of the topics.

The programme of the workshop entails pedagogical lectures and shorter topical talks, all delivered by women speakers, with the goal to teach each other, stimulate interactions and to foster possible collaborations between the participants, as well as to motivate the younger generation to enter these fields of research.

Two panel discussions related to women/gender issues in mathematical physics will also be held, trying to pinpoint the problems specific to such interdisciplinary fields of research and to search for possible solutions/actions specifically aimed at the younger generations.

Conference organizers:

International Organizing Committee

Xenia de la Ossa (University of Oxford, UK), Sylvie Paycha (Universität Potsdam, Germany), Kasia Rejzner (University of York, UK), Anne Taormina (Durham University, UK)

Local Organizing Committee

Anton Alekseev (Université de Genève, Switzerland), Susanne Reffert (Universität Bern, Switzerland)

Invited speakers and subjects (introductory lectures):

  • Symmetry and duality: Marta Mazzocco (University of Birmingham, UK) and Anastasia Volovich (Brown University, USA)
  • Topological, algebraic and geometric invariants: Sofia Labropoulou (National Technical University Athens, Greece) and Chenchang Zhu (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany)
  • Locality and singularities: Fay Dowker (Imperial College London, UK)

The introductory lectures will be followed by short topical talks, allowing ample time for free discussion.

An aperitif will be served at the end of the topical talks on Monday Feb.18th
