Women scientists visit local schools!

23 Nov 2021

Since 2015, the UN has proclaimed 11th of February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

This year, for the fourth consecutive time, Mathscope will participate to the "Women scientists visit local schools" from 7th to 11th February 2022 in Geneva.

On this occasion and for the entire week, CERN, Mathscope with UNIGE's Scienscope, EPFL and LAPP offer local schools the opportunity to welcome a woman scientist/engineer to talk about her profession to the students (in co-educational classes).

They are invited to talk about their career history, reveal some mysteries of science and, if they wish, to conduct some small demonstrations. The goal is to change the pupils' perception of the scientific and engineering professions, providing them with female role models. And who knows, perhaps interest more pupils, particularly girls, in a scientific career.

SwissMAP members interested in participating to the school visits please contact Outreach Officer Shaula Fiorelli.

For schools: Possibility of Online / Onsite visits

The following conditions apply:

  • Between 7 and 11 February 2022
  • Schools within 30 km of Geneva and Grand Annecy (a complete list of the areas concerned can be found in the school registration form)
  • 1 hour presentation
  • Class of maximum 30 students per visit
  • Between 7 and 15 years old
  • Presentation in English or French (other languages available on a case-by-case basis)
  • If you want to apply for more than one class, please contact (education.locale@cern.ch)

Teachers who apply are expected to:

  • Prepare their students for the visit of the researcher
  • Provide a beamer for the presentation
  • Inform the speakers of the COVID-19 protection plan in place in their school and follow the health measures detailed on the COVID-19 page.

Warning: limited number of presentations. If demand is particularly high, we will unfortunately not be able to accommodate all the school's requests. Thank you for your understanding.

COVID-19 info: we are closely monitoring the evolution of the measures put in place in Switzerland and France due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Please note that this activity will be offered virtually, in videoconference, if the situation in February turns out to be unfavorable
