Categorification in Algebra, Geometry and Physics conference

4 May 2015

Anna Beliakova together with Sabin Cautis and Aaron Lauda are organizing the conference "Categorification in Algebra, Geometry and Physics" in Cargèse (Corsica) from May 4-8, 2015.

The emerging mathematical philosophy known as “categorification” has demonstrated that many fundamental structures in modern mathematics are mere shadows of richer and more robust structures . Categorification is the process of uncovering this hidden layer of structure.

The enhanced perspective suggested by categorification has led to a number of shocking new results and has ushered in a new area of interaction between algebra, geometry, and theoretical physics . This is largely because categorification is a powerful tool for relating various branches of mathematics and exploiting the commonalities between fields. It exemplifies the duality between pure mathematics and theoretical physics, with ideas from one area inspiring innovation in the other .

This conference will create a forum for both young and established researchers to learn about the tools and techniques arising from categorification that have been used to solve concrete problems . The conference will bring together researchers from various fields of mathematics and theoretical physics to promote enhanced communication and the dissemination of ideas . Experts in categorification will present future directions, open problems, and areas of interest where the tools from categorification are likely to have significant impact.
