Congratulations to our member Benjamin Schlein for receiving an ERC Advanced Grant titled “Correlations in Large Quantum Systems”.
Benjamin Schlein, professor at the UZH Institute of Mathematics, is tackling one of the key questions of mathematical physics: He aims at understanding the macroscopic properties of quantum systems, as arising from a microscopic description based on the fundamental laws of nature. This is typically a very challenging problem.
Schlein therefore plans to develop new mathematical tools to describe correlations between interacting particles and to understand their effects on large quantum systems. Long-term goals include a mathematical proof of the emergence of Bose-Einstein condensation and of superconductivity, as well as a rigorous justification of the validity of the Boltzmann equation for quantum gases.
